ARCADIA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback says he’s confident that the arts in Kansas will be funded despite the announcement that the state won’t get federal matching grants because Brownback vetoed state arts funding.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports Brownback said Wednesday that private money is being raised for the arts in Kansas, but he says the fundraising will take some time. Brownback also said he wished the National Endowment for the Arts had given Kansas more time and worked with the state.
The NEA said earlier this week that it could no longer provide assistance to Kansas because of Brownback’s decision this year to withdraw state aid to the Kansas Arts Commission.
In the past, Kansas invested about $700,000 annually to secure $1.2 million in external grants for its arts programs.
