Area Teams at Wrestling Regionals

The Manhattan High Indians, ranked #4 in 6A, are set for Saturday’s Regional Wrestling Tournament at Derby. Fourteen Manhattan wrestlers will try to qualify for next weekend’s 6A State Tournament in Wichita. All 14 MHS wrestlers are seeded, which is a first for Manhattan Head Coach Bob Gonzales.  Drew Unruh (126 lbs), Tre Davis (132 lbs), Michael Leeper (152 lbs), and Trey Campbell (182 lbs) earned #1 seeds at their respective weights. The Tribe is expected to contend for the regional title along with Derby and Wichita Heights. MHS and Heights were both league champions last weekend. Wrestling begins at 9 am Saturday morning with the finals set for 4 pm. SportsRadio 1350 KMAN will have reports throughout the day with Jeff Burkhart and Jason Hilgers. An expanded wrapup will follow the K-State/Texas women’s basketball game Saturday night.

Wamego qualified one wrestler, Kyle Wilson (130 lbs), for the finals at the 4A Chapman Regional. Wilson will wrestle Slade Sare from Abilene in the championship round. All 12 Red Raider wrestlers remain alive going into Saturday’s action. Jacob Dietrich (113 lbs) and Daniel Houghlund (195 lbs) have reached the consolations finals and are one win away from reaching the 4A State Tournament. After Friday’s action, the Red Raiders sit in 10th place with 25 points. Colby (127 points), Smoky Valley (97.5 points), and McPherson (95 points) are the top three teams after the first day.

Rock Creek is competing in the 3-2-1A Regional at Council Grove. All 12 Mustang wrestlers move into Saturday’s action Marc Riess (120 lbs) and Trevor Sutton (170 lbs) will compete for a regional title. Riess (32-12) will battle Andrew Beck (29-8) in the finals. Sutton will square off with Jesse LaMay (36-2) from Wellsville in the championship. Five other Rock Creek wrestlers are in the consolation finals. After the first day, Silver Lake (86.5 points), Rock Creek (81.5 points), and Council Grove (73 points) own the top three team spots.

Riley County (59.5 points) sits in a tie for 8th place after day number one at the 3-2-1A Regional at Russell. Sawyer Havenstein (126 lbs) and Josh Brazzle (170 lbs) advanced to the finals with three victories on Friday. Havenstein will wrestle Cory Knight from SE-Saline while Brazzle will face Clay Cosand of Rock Hills. Nine Falcon wrestlers remain alive in the tournament. Hoisington (138.5 points), Smith Center (112.5 points), and Marysville (100.5 points) occupy first, second, and third in the team standings in Russell.

KMAN will update the proceedings from Chapman, Council Grove, and Russell throughout the day as well.
