Long ball carries Oregon State past K-State

A 6-run sixth inning including a Danny Hayes grand slam inning powered Oregon State to a 13-5 victory over K-State in the final game of the San Diego Tournament.  Hayes’ grand slam gave the Beavers an 11-4 lead, and was followed up by a Ryan Barnes 2-run double.

Oregon State jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to two other home runs.  Jake Rodriguez hit a solo shot that jumpstarted a 4-run 2nd inning, and Michael Conforto added a two-run home run in the third inning.  K-State lefty Jared Moore (0-1) gave up all six runs in his first collegiate start.  The Cats would battle back as two runs each would score in the bottom of the 3rd and fourth innings.  Ross Kivett scored on a passed ball, followed by a Jared King RBI double in the 3rd.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Wade Hinkle came through with a two-run single to cut the lead to 6-4 in the 4th.  But, Shane Conlon issued a bases loaded walk in the 5th to make it 7-4 Oregon State, before the Beavers’ big inning.  The Cats got one run back in the 7th with a Mike Kindel’s 2nd homer of the season, a solo shot.

K-State (3-4) will open their home schedule this weekend as Pacific comes calling for a three game series.  First pitch will be at 3:00pm on Friday, 2:00pm on Saturday, and noon on Sunday.  All three games will air on SportsRadio 1350.
