The Big 12 conference men’s basketball coaches created controversy on Sunday when they honored one of their peers. There was no argument when Kansas’ Bill Self was named Big 12 coach of the year after leading the Jayhawks to their eighth straight league title. But, Self shared the honor with Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg, who revamped the Cyclones into a third place team. The pick of Hoiberg over Missouri’s Frank Haith for co-Big 12 coach of the year led some to question whether the Big 12’s coaches had a vendetta against departing Missouri.
The Associated Press stepped up and named Haith as their Big 12 coach of the year. Haith received nine of 18 possible votes from the media, while Self picked up seven votes, and Hoiberg got the other two. The issue may be solved this weekend at the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, as KU, Mizzou and Iowa State are the top three seeds.
