WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Participants in the annual winter wheat tour are finding most fields maturing early and potentially record yields on the first day of the trek through northern Kansas.
The trade group Kansas Wheat reports an average yield estimate of 53.6 bushels per acre after making 267 field stops on Tuesday. That is the highest estimate in the history of the three-day tour.
Estimated yields the first day ranged from 120 bushels per acre to 21 bushels per acre.
The tour also found the crop is two to three weeks ahead of schedule.
Participants are stomping through fields across western and southern Kansas Wednesday as they head to Wichita.
Their estimated production for the 2012 crop will be announced Thursday at the Kansas City Board of Trade.
