Bicycle Advisory Committee Opens Up for Public Comment

The Bicycle Advisory Committee had an open house to get public comments and feedback Wednesday evening before the bike plan is taken before the Manhattan City Commission.

During the open house, a presentation was given to go over the goals and the policies that will be taken before the Urban Board and the City Commission in the following months.

After the presentation, those in attendance were asked to give feedback and comment on how they felt about the proposed information.

“Really it’s all about how the rubber meets the road,” Ben Champion, member of the bicycle advisory committee said.  “I mean these policies are great and if we can go through the readings necessary in the community to have them put in our plan that’s wonderful, but we still need to then make good decisions about actually doing things that we said would be good to do.”

After the discussion, the audience was asked to look at the current map that was presented on a white board and to make comments or recommendations that would be included in the presentation to the commission.

One piece of feedback concerned the bike boulevard on Moro.

“I know personally, it’s a nice road to bike on,” Katherine Vaughan, health educator at the Riley County Health Department, said.  “The bike boulevard has a lowered speed limit and there are the share arrows which indicate to the cars that they need to share the road.”

There is to be more observation on Moro to gain data to be presented to the commission.

The Bicycle Advisory Committee’s next meeting will be Thursday, June 21 at 4:30 pm in the City Commission room of City Hall.
