Not satisfied with being the first former K-State Wildcat to play in the US Open in a quarter century, Aaron Watkins stayed in contention the entire way. The 29-year old Nationwide tour player made the cut on Friday, which Jim Colbert last did in 1984, and didn’t fade on the weekend. Watkins shot a 2-over-par 72 on Saturday, and a 1-over-par 71 on Sunday to finish at +6 for the tournament. He tied for 15th place in his first major, five shots behind eventual winner Webb Simpson.
Watkins is slated to play in this weekend’s Nationwide event in Wichita, the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open. Play starts on Thursday.
