The sun was barely reaching over the horizon on Tuesday morning as American flags and well wishers gathered on Pierre street on the eastern side of town to send off some local heroes on the first leg of their trip to Washington D.C. as part of the Honor Flight Program.
Veterans John Roberts, Rix Shanline, Norbert “Doc” Stigge and Charles Niernberger were sent off in style with a police and patriot guard escort.
Patriot Guard Road Captain Denise Farmer says it was an honor sending the veterans off on their trip, and appreciated all the folks who showed up to show their support.
Flint Hills Veterans Coalition representative Tom Fryer says the veterans will be able to see their war memorials, and tour the nation’s capital for three days free of charge.
