FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) A fourth bust has been added to the Buffalo Soldier monument at Fort Leavenworth.
The unveiling of the bust came during a celebration Wednesday of the 20th anniversary of the original dedication of the monument, which honors the first all-black peacetime unit in the U.S. Army.
The bust added Wednesday depicts the 10th Cavalry’s longtime commander, Brig. Gen. Benjamin Grierson.
Although Grierson was white, he was an advocate for his black soldiers throughout his 22 years commanding the 10th Cavalry. The soldiers were often given the worst equipment and faced serious prejudice from white soldiers.
The Leavenworth Times reports the bust unveiled Wednesday honors Grierson not only as a leader, but as an advocate for his troops.
