The city of Manhattan will receive a large grant from KDOT for improvements, firework safety might be facing revision, and a look at the final designs for the manhattan regional airport were all on the table for last night’s Manhattan city commission work session.
Mayor Loren Pepperd revealed a $900,000 award from KDOT will be used on a intersection for K-18.
Meanwhile commisioners mulled over the possibility of firework safety being moved into the hands of the Manhattan Fire Director after commissioners get more input from city staff.
The possible revision came after over 3-hundred and 50-thousand dollars worth of damage is suspected to have come from fireworks accidents in 2012. Commissioner John Matta says the ban option should be in the hands of the elected officials.
The “Rolling Hills” concept seemed to gain popular support as the $50,000,000 Manhattan Airport project is being revealed. MHK Director Peter Van Kuren projects the city of Manhattan would possibly have to pay $12,900,00 million of that total by the end of all the renovations if the project is backed as predicted by the FAA. The project is scheduled to be rolled out in phases to provide flexibility over the time of construction.
Van Kuren adds the 50 million figure refers to future project, but the projects involved are more than the terminal expansion. It also includes runway expansion. These will be further refined as the design is completed.
