HIAWATHA, Kan. (AP) A 12-year-old northeast Kansas boy has been charged with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl.
Brown County Attorney Kevin Hill said Friday the Hiawatha boy faces two juvenile counts of rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy. Hill filed the charges last week on the same day he received reports from the sheriff’s office and state social service officials.
A phone message for the boy’s attorney, Judd Herbster, was not immediately returned. The boy remained in custody.
Hill said he had no immediate plans to seek to try the boy as an adult. But he has until an October adjudication hearing to make a decision.
The alleged assault occurred last month. Hill said the children aren’t related, but he declined to say how they knew each other.
