Hours after a horrific collision between a Tractor Trailer rig and an SUV which sent two drivers to the hospital, Interstate 70 in Wabunsee and Shawnee Counties fully reopened to traffic late Friday night.
As of 11:50 p.m. the Kansas Department of Transportation announced in a press release that all lanes of the interstate had reopened after the completion cleanup of fuel that had spilled onto the roadway following the crash.
According to KDOT, the accident happened around 7 p.m. near Mile Marker 342 at Maple Hill. All lanes of the interstate were shut down as a result and traffic was diverted onto Carlson Road. By 8:30 p.m. one lane was re-opened in each direction and by 10:15 p.m. both lanes were re-opened on the eastbound side while the westbound side remained reduced to one lane of traffic.
There is no word on the condition of the drivers whose vehicles were reportedly traveling eastbound on the interstate when the SUV collided with the front of the rig sending the rig across the median and into the westbound lanes.
Barring any further incidents I-70 should be fully operational for game day traffic traveling to the K-State-Miami Football game on Saturday.
