K-State sweeps Gaels, ties for best start in school history

For just the third time, a K-State volleyball team has won their first eight matches of the season. The Cats swept St. Mary’s 25-20, 25-18 and 27-25 on Thursday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse to match the 1988 and 2005 teams at 8-0 to begin the campaign. Both of those squads lost their next match, and K-State has a chance to be the first group to be 9-0 on Saturday night at home against Utah State. Junior outside hitter Lilla Porubek led the Cats against the Gaels with 11 kills, 4 digs, 2 blocks, and an ace. Kathleen Ludwig also had 9 kills as she hit .600, and registered 7 blocks.

K-State sprinted away from St. Mary’s (4-3) in each of the first two sets, leading by at least nine points in each frame. The Cats though battled thru the Gaels in the final set, trailing until taking a 21-20 lead, before concluding the proceedings on their fourth match point.

K-State and Utah State are part of a Wildcat Weekend, as they’ll meet Saturday night at 6:00pm at Ahearn Fieldhouse. Admission is just $3 with a K-State/Miami football ticket. Coverage will begin at 5:30 on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN with the Standard Plumbing, Heating & Air pregame show. St. Marys will meet the Aggies at 5:00pm on Friday night at Ahearn.
