Saturday morning at about 9 am, a number of people could be seen walking from the Manhattan Town Center Mall along a designated path, ending at the Catholic Charities and Housing and Credit Counseling on Poyntz.

This was the United Way of Riley County’s kick off campaign for 2012, where they announced their goal to meet.

Riley County United Way director Lee Ann Desper told KMAN that they are looking at $525,000 as their goal.

The money that is raised is used to help 13 local charities in Riley, Pottawatomie, Clay, Marshall, Washington, as well as the western half of Wabaunsee County.

Throughout these counties, there are specific areas is which the United Way focuses and those include heal, education and income.

Certain organizations are awarded monies based on the type of programs they offer.

To find out more about the organization or ways to volunteer, visit their website at unitedwayrc.org or by calling 785-776-3779.
