K-State holds on to defeat George Washington 65-62

In a back and forth game the Kansas State Wildcats were able to survive their first true road test of the season as they held off a scrappy George Washington team 65-62 Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

Angel Rodriguez led the Wildcats with 17 points and sank three consecutive free throws during a critical point of the second half, free throws that ultimately provided the Wildcats their winning victory margin. Rodney McGruder playing in his hometown in front of more than 60 friends and family added 15 points and Will Spradling added 10 points and remained perfect from the free throw line with two key points from the charity stripe.

George Washington had numerous chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute and a half but could not get close in shots to fall and missed a three-pointer as time ran out. K-State trailed 29-27 at halftime but outscored the Colonials 38-33 in the second half to improve to 7-1 on the season and sweep the home and home series between the two teams. The Wildcats defeated George Washington in a close affair last year at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats are in action again next Saturday on the other side of the country as they will travel to Seattle to meet Gonzaga. The two teams last met in 2010 in the CBE Classic at Kansas City’s Sprint Center in a game easily won by K-State.
