Carolyn Davis scored 29 points and Chelsea Gardner added 19 as the Kansas Jayhawks Women’s Basketball team knocked off Kansas State 89-80 in double overtime before 6,992 in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak in Manhattan for the ‘Hawks who won at Bramlage for the first time since January 27, 2001.
It was a back and forth first half for the two teams which concluded in a 28-28 tie at halftime. K-State grabbed its largest lead at 37-30 on a layup by Mariah White early in the second half but KU then went on a 10-2 run to lead 40-39. For the rest of the second half neither team had a larger lead than three points, which was the deficit K-State faced in the final minute of regulation when Freshman Brianna Craig drained a game-tying three point basket with 24 seconds left. The Jayhawks were unable to answer and the game went to overtime.
In the first overtime it was KU’s turn to hit the big shot as Angel Goodrich tied the game at 74 all on a three-pointer with 10 seconds left. K-State appeared to have a shot at the win but Haley Texada was unable to draw a foul on a layup attempt and the game went into a second extra session. Davis and Gardner each made baskets to start the second overtime and the Wildcats who had just seven players available were unable to keep up and Kansas (14-6, 5-4) escaped the Little Apple with the win.
Five of the seven players the Jayhawks used were in double figures. Joining Davis and Gardner were Monica Engleman with 12 points and Goodrich and Asia Boyd with 11 apiece. For Davis her big day occurred on the same floor where 51 weeks earlier she suffered a painful season-ending ACL injury to her knee.
For K-State Texada was the scoring leader with 21 points….four other Cats joined her in double figures as White had 18 points, Brittany Chambers and Craig had 14 points apiece and Lawrence native Chantay Caron added 11.
Kansas State (12-9, 3-6) will be at home again on Wednesday when Oklahoma comes to Bramlage Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
