TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Topeka man has been found guilty of multiple charges for a November 2011 home invasion in which he burned a woman twice with a heated knife blade.
The Topeka Capital Journal reports a jury took about 90 minutes Thursday to find Monroe Lockhart III guilty of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
The 40-year-old is to be sentenced April 30.
Kansas sentencing guidelines call for a prison term of about eight years. That’s more than twice as long as the three years and nine months he would have received under a plea deal he reached with prosecutors earlier in the trial.
The judge rejected the plea when Lockhart said he was taking the deal only because he didn’t like his attorney.
