K-State Baseball Salvages Final Game Of Series

With a threat of rain and an altered schedule, K-State’s weekend Baseball series with Cal-Poly was already in a jumble. The two teams had played a doubleheader on Friday which was swept by the Mustangs by scores of 10-8 and 6-2 and now they were hopeful of getting in a game on Saturday with cold wind and snow showers in the forecast for Sunday.

The game started three hours later than the scheduled 2 p.m. first pitch but it turned out to be worth the wait for Sophomore pitcher Matt Wivinis who baffled the 21st-ranked team in the country with a complete game as the Bat Cats avoided a sweep of the series with a 10-4 victory Saturday evening at Tointon Family Stadium.

Wivinis registered five strikeouts and allowed just seven hits as he tossed his first career complete game and he got plenty of offensive support as R.J. Santigate led a 13-hit attack with three hits of his own and K-State salted the game away by scoring five runs over the final two innings of the game. The loss for Cal-Poly was just their second of the season.

Kansas State (9-5) returns to the diamond on Tuesday evening to open a two-game series with Northern Colorado. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
