K-State Bullpen Paves Way to Win at Baylor

The freshman bullpen combination of Levi MaVorhis and Jake Matthys shut down Baylor in the final four innings and K-State scratched out just enough offense in a 3-2 win on Thursday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

Wildcat senior southpaw Joe Flattery pitched into the sixth inning, and left the game with nobody out and runners on first and third base. MaVorhis (3-0) then struck out the next two batters and induced a groundout to get K-State out of the jam. The Freeland, WA native would go on to win for the second time in as many games, but run into trouble of his own in the eighth, with a leadoff single. Matthys then entered the game, and struck out two after a sac bunt to hold the Bears off the scoreboard. Matthys then pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save.

After Baylor took an early 1-0 lead, K-State came right back with a pair of runs in the second inning to go ahead 2-1. R.J. Santigate led off the frame with a double and scored when Jon Davis hammered a triple to deep center field. Blair DeBord then came thru with the first of his three hits, an RBI single down the left-field line to plate Davis.

The Cats went ahead for good in the 6th as they broke a tie at 2. DeBord began the inning with a single. After being sacrificed over to second base, Ross Kivett surprised the Baylor defense by laying down a bunt. Newly inserted Baylor reliever Crayton Bare threw the ball past first base, allowing DeBord to score.

K-State earned just their fourth win all-time at Baylor Ballpark, and will now go for the series win against the Bears on Friday night at 6:35pm. Pregame begins at 6:00 on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN.
