Nate Williams threw 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball and the K-State baseball team claimed their home opener from Oakland 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium. Williams (2-1) did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the sixth inning, when third baseman Mike Carson knocked in the Golden Grizzlies’ first run. Oakland would score an unearned run off Williams in the 8th inning, keyed by a K-State error to lead off the inning. Tanner Witt struck out two in the top of the ninth to nail down his second save.
Witt also led K-State with three hits including his first double, and scored a run. He led off the game with a single, stole second base, and came into score on Shane Conlon’s RBI single that gave the Cats an early 1-0 run. Conlon extended his hitting streak to seven games to open the season, and knocked in a pair of runs. Conlon put K-State (4-3) up 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout, after Austin Fisher’s RBI single earlier in the inning. The Cats would scratch out another run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to both of Oakland’s errors.
Jason Hager (0-1) took the loss for Oakland (0-5), giving up three runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts over six winnings of work.
K-State and Oakland will play two at Tointon Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The doubleheader starts at noon, and SportsRadio 1350 KMAN will join the game at first pitch.
