The Kansas State Wildcats Baseball team knew what was at stake Friday Night as they began their three-game weekend series with Texas Tech at Tointon Family Stadium especially knowing they could have easily swept last weekend’s road series at Baylor but wound up losing two games they had led. For much of this opening game on Friday night it looked like the result would be the same.
Down to their last out and last strike, Austin Fisher knocked a two-run single to right field to give K-State a dramatic 6-5 come from behind victory over Texas Tech before a season high crowd of 3,866.
The Bat Cats took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back RBI doubles by Fisher and Blair DeBord in the bottom of the second inning. The Red Raiders however came charging back and took the lead with a three-run fourth inning and added another tally in the top of the fifth frame to make the score 4-2. K-State responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by R.J. Santigate. Tech led 5-3 going to the bottom of the eighth before the Wildcats drew closer on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Meyer.
In the bottom of the ninth, Shane Conlan got the rally started with a one-out single and advanced to second when Jared King was hit by a pitch. After Santigate flew to right for the second out, Jon Davis tied the game on a single to right that scored Conlan and then Fisher won the game with a two-out, two-strike single of his own touching off a wild celebration and putting the Wildcats back above .500 in conference play. Jake Matthys who pitched a third of an inning improved to 4-0 as he picked up the win in relief.
Kansas State (21-10, 4-3) will battle Texas Tech in the second game of the three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
