Who will succeed Collin Klein as K-State’s starting quarterback? Daniel Sams and Jake Waters both hope to be the answer to that question, and each will get their shot during spring practice. Wildcat coach Bill Snyder said at a press conference on Thursday that the duo is currently neck-and-neck in the battle for the job as each needs to find a certain level of consistency in the offense.
Sams is a redshirt sophomore who served as Klein’s backup last season, and showed amazing speed in mop-up duty running the ball with 32 carries for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Whether Sams can be an effective passer or not is up for debate, he threw for 55 yards while completing six of eight attempts. The Slidell, LA native is in his third year in the program with an ever increasing knowledge, while Waters is a junior college transfer from Iowa Western. Waters must consume Wildcat coach Bill Snyder’s massive playbook before August to win the job. His ability to run an offense was proven in leading the Reivers to a NJCAA national title, and he was named the national offensive player of the year. Waters threw for 3,501 yards with 39 touchdowns and just three interceptions, while completing 73.3 percent of his passes. He will also be expected at K-State to run the ball more, as he gained 256 yards on 52 totes with six scores last year at Iowa Western.
K-State fans will get their opportunity to see both Sams and Waters in action during the annual Purple/White spring game on Saturday, April 27th with a 1:10pm at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The contest will air on both SportsRadio 1350 KMAN and 101.5 K-Rock, the flagship stations of the K-State Sports Network.
