K-State partnered with PSC Environmental Inc. to provide a free e-waste collection on Saturday morning. K-State students and Manhattan area residents unplugged their old appliances, TVs, cell phones etc., and dropped them off for proper recycling.
Howie’s Trash Service will sort the e-waste, and send it out to two different certified recycling plants for complete processing. “The monitors and TVs with the glass in them, they’ll go to one recycler down in Texas, and then all the other things go to another recycler… they’re certified recyclers. Everything stays in the United States, gets demanufactured, and recycled. Nothing goes out to a third world country,” said Kelly Greene, Environmental Manager for Kansas State University.
More than 17,000 pounds of material was collected during K-State’s first e-waste event in April of 2011.
