Joe Flattery worked five and one third scoreless innings and Kansas State took advantage of Oklahoma mistakes while benefitting from timely hitting as the Wildcats, one night after winning the program’s first conference championship in 80 years knocked off the Sooners 5-2 before 2,506 Saturday evening at Tointon Family Stadium.
K-State got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Tanner Witt scored on a fielder’s choice. The Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when the Sooners committed an error while trying to complete a double play and finished out their scoring on a two-run single by Mitch Meyer in the bottom of the seventh.
Oklahoma scored two runs in the top of the ninth against closer Jake Matthys before he closed the door allowing KSU to tie their regular season record for most wins.
Flattery, making his first start since April 19 was perfect through the first four innings of the game and allowed just three hits while striking out four batters. Shane Conlon went three for four and scored a run while Meyer went two for four with the two RBI’s.
Kansas State (39-15, 16-7) will wrap up the regular season on Sunday as they try for the sweep of the Sooner. Please note that due to anticipated severe weather later in the day first pitch has been moved up to 11 a.m.
