The Kansas State Wildcat Baseball team wrote another chapter in what is fast becoming a storybook season for the program as they jumped on arch-rival Kansas early then finished off the Jayhawks late as they cruised to a 7-3 victory to complete a three-game sweep of the Sunflower Showdown on Sunday before 1,806 at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence. Mitch Meyer led the way for the Bat Cats driving in a career-high three runs and Blake McFadden allowed just three hits in five innings of work to pick up his fifth win of the season.
The Bat Cats jumped on KU starter Frank Duncan for two first inning runs when Jared King hit a sacrifice fly and Austin Fisher drew a bases-loaded walk. After the Jayhawks cut the lead in half in their part of the inning, K-State put two more on the board in the third on a two-run triple by Meyer to make the score 4-1. Meyer made it 5-1 in the fifth on a single to left that plated Fisher.
After KU drew closer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, K-State finished off their rivals with two more runs in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by King and a single by Fisher that scored Shane Conlon. K-State has now won five of its last six games played in Lawrence and has swept KU in four of the last seven seasons. The Cats also tied a program record with their 14th win in conference play.
Kansas State (37-15, 14-7) has an opportunity to clinch the top seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament and the regular season title next weekend back at Tointon Family Stadium against Oklahoma. One win in the series clinches a share of the championship. On Sunday the Sooners salvaged the final game of the Bedlam Series with a win over Oklahoma State while West Virginia lost to TCU. The Wildcats and Sooners play on Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
