For the first time in school history, K-State will be the #1 seed in the Big 12 baseball tournament after winning the regular season title. The Cats will open play on Wednesday afternoon against #8 seed Texas Tech. K-State swept the Red Raiders in Manhattan on Easter weekend in April to start a run of 13 league wins in 17 tries. The Cats clinched the Big 12 crown with a series win against Oklahoma over the weekend, and could see the Sooners early in Oklahoma City. OU is in K-State’s double-elimination pool as the #4 seed and will face 5th seeded Baylor on Wednesday morning. The Bears took two of three games from the Cats in Waco during late March.
In the other pool, West Virginia earned the #3 seed in their first Big 12 season and will open up with #6 seed Kansas. Oklahoma State is the #2 seed and will face #7 seed TCU to conclude Wednesday’s action. K-State went a combined 8-4 during the Big 12 regular season against the opposite pool. Texas is the only school among nine who play baseball in the Big 12 not to make the conference tournament.
After the opening round games, the losing teams from day one will play an elimination game on Thursday, while the winning teams in each pool will square off with the reward being a day off on Friday. On Saturday, anywhere between two and four games will be played at Bricktown Ballpark to determine the pool winners to set the matchup for Sunday’s Big 12 Championship.
First pitch will be at 12:30pm on Wednesday for K-State and Texas Tech from Bricktown Ballpark to open the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. Pregame begins at noon on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN from the K-State Sports Network.
