K-State Set to Open Big 12 Tourney

For the first time, K-State will be the #1 seed in the Big 12 baseball tournament, but everyone’s hearts and minds will be with the folks in Moore, Oklahoma after Monday’s devastating tornadoes.  The Cats will take the field against Texas Tech Thursday, but on the eve of the event on Wednesday the team contributed supplies to the victims.   Big 12 Player of the Year Ross Kivett told K-StateSports.com they were proud to step up.  “We’re here because this is the right thing to do,” Kivett said.  “We’re very blessed to have the opportunities we have, and it’s right to give back to those who suffered losses in this terrible instance.”

The tournament has shifted from a double elimination format to pool play over the next three days leading up to Sunday’s title game.  K-State coach Brad Hill says their approach won’t be different.  “We’ll still throw the same rotation with Blake McFadden, Levi MaVorhis and Joe Flattery,” Hill said.  “The positive that comes out of there is that Joe gets another start. If we can be fortunate enough to reach the finals on Sunday, we can get to a fourth starter.”

Hill adds the Big 12 tournament will be a good dry run for the NCAA regionals from a pitching standpoint.

K-State will open the Big 12 tournament with Texas Tech on Thursday in Oklahoma City.  The 12:30pm start time has been delayed to 3:15 due to weather in OKC, as the opener between Baylor and Oklahoma was pushed back.  Play-by-play from the K-State Sports Network with Wyatt Thompson, Brian Smoller, and Matt Walters will air on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN.
