K-State’s Meyer & Matthys Honored by Big 12

After claiming a Big 12 title, the league honored a pair of K-Staters when they announced their final weekly honors. Wildcat sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Mitch Meyer has caught fire down the stretch and was named Big 12 player of the week. Meyer went 6-for-12 with a double and four RBI in the series victory over then #19 Oklahoma. He came thru with a key two-run single in K-State’s rally from a four-run defiict during Friday night’s Big 12 clinching victory, and added another two-run base hit in Saturday’s 5-2 triumph over OU.

Freshman pitcher Jake Matthys was named Big 12 newcomer of the week for the second time this season after earning both a win and a save against the Sooners. Matthys broke the Wildcat record for wins by a freshman with eight by pitching the final inning and a third on Friday night. He also finished the final two and two thirds innings in Saturday’s victory over OU, and tied the K-State freshman record with his sixth save.

The #1 seeded Wildcats take on Texas Tech at 12:30 PM in Oklahoma City on Wednesday in their Big 12 tournament opener. Pregame coverage starts at noon on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN from the K-State Sports Network at Bricktown Ballpark.
