Alex Gordon’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Kansas City Royals a thrilling come from behind 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.
This was a roller coaster of a game for the Royals who won their fourth in a row. After being no-hit for four innings by White Sox starter Jose Quintana, Kansas City took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chicago struck back with four runs in the top of the seventh to lead 5-3 and took that lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Down to their last strike in the bottom of the ninth inning, Billy Butler hit a two-out double to tie the game at 5-5 off Sox closer Addison Reed. Lorenzo Cain led off the 10th inning with a single and stole second. Two outs later, Chris Getz was intentionally walked and George Kottaras drew a free pass before Gordon launched a fly ball that appeared would be caught by Chicago right fielder Alex Rios. However, the ball went beyond the reach of Rios’ glove allowing Cain to score and Kansas City had its 11th comeback win of the season which is tied for best in the Major Leagues. The Royals at 17-10 are seven games over the .500 mark for the first time since the beginning of play on May 8, 2009 when they were 18-11.
The Royals and White Sox finish up the series on Monday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium. This is the makeup for the rained out game from Friday night. First pitch on Monday is set for 1:10 p.m.
