The Kansas State Wildcats have now won 36 Baseball games this season, but none may be more impressive than the one they pulled off Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence.
Trailing 6-0 at one point, the Wildcats scored the next nine including the the three in the ninth that would provide the winning margin in a 9-6 victory over Kansas in Game 2 of the Sunflower Showdown. The Jayhawks built up their lead in the first three innings by jumping all over starter Matt Wivinis for six runs and seven hits. After that, the Wildcat bullpen held KU scoreless on just two hits the rest of the way allowing K-State to stage their comeback. Lance Miles started the rally with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. The Bat Cats drew closer with three more in the top of the sixth when Mitch Meyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Miles drove in two more runs with a single to left to make the score 6-4. The comeback was complete in the seventh as K-State tied the score on a single by Austin Fisher and and RBI double by Jon Davis.
The score remained 6-6 headed into the top of the ninth. It was then that the Wildcats stormed ahead as Fisher hit a two-run homer and Meyer delivered a solo jack. Tanner Witt worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to nail down the victory and the series win. Nate Williams (4-3) picked up the win while Witt picked up his seventh save. Kansas State (36-15, 13-7) has won yet another crucial series and remains atop the Big 12 standings with four regular season games remaining. West Virginia split a doubleheader with TCU on Saturday while Oklahoma dropped its second straight contest to arch-rival Oklahoma State allowing the Cowboys to move into third place.
K-State and KU will wrap up the series on Sunday as the Wildcats look for the sweep. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
