Ross Kivett’s double in the ninth inning set up a game-tying single by Tanner Witt then a four-run tenth inning allowed Kansas State to rally for a 6-2 victory over number three National seed Oregon State before 3,574 Saturday night at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon in Game 1 of the best of three NCAA Super Regional.
After the game was scoreless through three and a half innings, the Beavers took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Michael Conforto off starter Joe Flattery. Meanwhile, Oregon State starter Matt Boyd kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard for five innings before John Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. K-State would leave the bags full in both the sixth and eighth innings and was down to its last strike with the bases empty in the top of the ninth before Kivett laced a double to right-center field. An error allowed Kivett to advance to third and he came home on Witt’s RBI single. In the tenth inning, Jared King led off with a double and then came home one out later on an RBI single by Davis. Mitch Meyer’s single to left plated Davis for a 4-2 lead and then after Blair DeBord was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch, Kivett singled to right field to score Meyer and R.J. Santigate and make the margin 6-2.
Jake Matthys (9-1) worked two scoreless innings and retired the Beavers despite giving out a one-out double in the bottom of the tenth to secure the win.
Kansas State (45-17) now only needs to win one out of a possible two games to advance to the College World Series which begins June 15 in Omaha, Nebraska. The first chance will come Sunday evening in Game 2 of the Super Regional. First pitch is set for 9 p.m. CDT.
