Eight high school state championships will now be handed out each year in football, volleyball, basketball, softball, and baseball in the Sunflower State. 64 member schools made up class 4A in the Kansas High School Athletic Association (KSHSAA) during the 2012-13 school year. 4A held a large range in enrollment between its members over the last year in all sports but football, from Highland Park with 729 students to Rock Creek and Frontenac with 258. The member schools voted this spring by ballot to split 4A into divisions one and two, with 32 members in each division. The changes will take effect for the 2013-14 school year in volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball, while football will divide up in the fall of 2014 when districts are re-drawn in the spring.
The proposal passed 42-22. Wamego had 451 students in 2012-13, and according to athletic director Mark Stephen, they voted against the proposal. Athletic director Mark Stephen says USD 321 cast their vote after a survey of the coaches. Rock Creek voted for the proposal, according to AD Scott Harshbarger.
