On his first day as a pro, now former K-State high jumper Erik Kynard claimed his first USA Track & Field championship on Sunday. The London Olympics silver medalist cleared the first four heights without a miss, including one at seven feet, five and three quarter inches. His next closest competitor, former Nebraska standout Dusty Jonas missed that mark on his first attempt. Neither Kynard nor Jonas would clear the next height, seven feet, seven inches, but Jonas’ earlier miss gave Kynard the national championship.
Kynard’s win qualifies him for Team USA for the IAAF World Championships in Russia from August 10th thru the 18th. He is the first former Wildcat to win the USA high jump title since Nathan Leeper grabbed back-to-back crowns in 2001 and 2002.
