Former Geary County Official Dies

William "Bill" Deppish
William “Bill” Deppish

For 15 years he served as Sheriff of Geary County–Bill Deppish passed away over the weekend at the Valley View retirement community. Current Sheriff Tony Wolf has fond memories of the late law enforcement official.

When Tony Wolf first got hired by the sheriff’s department in 1996, he clearly remembers walking into the office for his interview, and walking past the office of then Sheriff Deppish sitting in his chair. In fact he remembers wanting to occupy that chair.

Wolf says that’s one of his most colorful memories of Sheriff Deppish, and one he’s kept in his mind all17 years he’s been with the department. Wolf was elected to the sheriff’s position this last year.

After his years as Sheriff, Deppish became a Geary County Commissioner, serving two terms until 2008, and continuing work at Wal-Mart in Junction City until October of 2011. He also served as president of the St. Xavier’s School board and was a huge K-State fan.

A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday morning at 10 at St. Xavier’s Catholic Church, with the family receiving friends Tuesday evening from six to eight at St. Xavier’s, with a vigil to begin at 7:30.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  An Honorary guard will be provided by the Knight of Columbus Fourth Degree Knights. Pall bearers include Sheriff Wolf, and his predecessor Sheriff Jim Jensen.

Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Junction City is handling arrangements.
