K-State nearly took the second set from the Czech Republic in their second match of the World University Games for Team USA, but the Wildcats fell in straight sets 14-25, 25-27 and 14-25.

Team USA racked up 10 blocks in the match, including five in the second set alone. USA had the Czech Republic on the ropes with leads of 14-11 and 21-16 in the second set before a late Czech rally took the set away.

“We were very good controlling the net tonight and created some tremendous momentum opportunities with our blocking,” said head coach Suzie Fritz in a press release. “Our goal is to use these opportunities against teams that are more experienced than we are and to learn from them. We are getting better as we go.”

Dakota Kaufman had seven kills to lead the team while Taylor Johnson and Chelsea Keating each had six kills.  Tristan McCarty had 15 digs, and Keating added 12.  Johnson topped the Cats with three blocks.

Team USA takes on Russia at 11 a.m. Central Wednesday in the final match of pool play.
