Prairie Star is located off Marlatt, near the “Top of the World” area. Around 10-12 homes are located on the road, and are looking to possibly form a paving district.
Assistant County Counselor, Craig Cox shared this information with the Riley County Commission during Thursday’s commission meeting.
Cox said they did run into a snag with this concept, as Kansas State University property would be involved. If they were to continue with the original plans and pave from Marlatt through Prairie Star, K-State would have to be in the paving district as well. According to Cox, this is not a good option, as the probability of having the assessment denied would be much higher.
Cox is currently working with the potential district to find other options of going about the project.
During Cox’s time, he mentioned the tax auction will be coming up sometime in September. A date has not yet officially been decided, as Cox must contact and coordinate a time with different county offices-including the treasurer’s office and the clerk’s office.

Planning and Special Projects Director, Monty Wedel voiced a concern to commissioners regarding the concealed carry law.
Recent changes in the legislation indicate the ability for cities and counties to have any zoning control over firearms, guns, and ammunition have been eliminated.
Wedel will be on a conference call Monday, with Kansas Association of Counties representatives, to discuss the topic in further detail.
A new flood plain map is also currently in the works. Wedel said the new map could impact local residents, as some will move into the flood way.
