WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police have identified a pedestrian struck and killed by a freight train, but they’re not certain why the man appeared not to notice the danger before it was too late.
KFDI-FM reports Robert L. Wells, 26, of Wichita, was dead at the scene of the accident late Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses told investigators Wells was crossing the tracks and turned to see the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train just before he was struck. The train’s crew had sounded a horn but could not stop the train in time.
Police Lt. Joe Schroeder says the victim did not have any disabilities, and the death doesn’t appear to have been a suicide. He also says Wells was not wearing headphones.
