Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss announced today that the Supreme Court has reappointed Judge Meryl D. Wilson to a two-year term as Chief Judge of the 21st Judicial District, effective January 1, 2014. Judge Wilson has served as a district judge in the 21st Judicial District since April of 1997. He presides over cases in Clay and Riley Counties.
Chief Judge Wilson said, “I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the citizens of the 21st Judicial District, and I look forward to working to make our courts the best they can be.”
Chief Judge Wilson is a graduate of Kansas State University and Washburn Law School. He was in the private practice of law in Manhattan from 1974 until 1997 when he was appointed to the bench. Judge Wilson attended the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada. He served as president of the Kansas District Judges Association and was appointed to serve as a member of the Kansas Supreme Court’s Blue Ribbon Commission. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Wilson was a Big 8 basketball official from 1983 to 1994. Judge Wilson is married to Nancy Wilson who graduated from Kansas State University in 1972. They have six children including five daughters, all who graduated from Kansas State.
Chief Justice Nuss said, “I am very pleased to announce Chief Judge Wilson’s reappointment. The Kansas Judicial Branch is facing a number of challenges, particularly the underfunding of the courts. We will rely on Chief Judge Wilson’s assistance in facing them.”
