The Defense Department says a soldier from northeast Kansas has died after his patrol came under fire in Afghanistan.

The soldier was identified Monday as Sgt. 1st Class Forrest W. Robertson (35), of Westmoreland. The Pentagon says Robertson’s unit was attacked Sunday by small-arms fire in Afghanistan’s Logar province.

Robertson was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Troop of the 6th Squadron, 8th Calvary Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Ga.

U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan says “America is forever indebted to Sergeant First Class Forrest Robertson, whose service and sacrifice in defense of his country is immeasurable. My deepest sympathies go out to his wife, children and family, and I ask all Kansans to join me in remembering his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
