Melvin Ejim, Shane Southwell

Marcus Foster scored a career-high 20 points and broke the Freshman record for most three-point baskets in a season but it was not enough to sustain a late rally as the Kansas State Wildcats lost their second consecutive Big 12 Basketball game as they fell to Iowa State 81-75 Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

The two teams played fairly even through the game’s first eight minutes, but then Iowa State built up a 46-34 halftime lead thanks to a 29-16 run on the strength of eight three-pointers. K-State then scored the first nine points of the second half to cut the deficit to 46-43.

After a three-pointer by Shane Southwell tied the score at 50-50, the Cyclones then went on an 11-3 run to lead 64-53 with 7:54 remaining. K-State then fought back to tie the score once more at 66-66 with 5:01 to play in regulation on a 13-2 run sparked by a trio of three-pointers by Will Spradling and a layup by D.J. Johnson. However, critical turnovers and missed shots proved to be costly for Kansas State as Iowa State was able to score six points in the span of one minute and hang on for the victory.

According to K-State Sports Information, Foster’s three three-pointers gave him 44 for the season and broke the Freshman record previously set by Brian Henson who had 42 during the 1991-92 season. Joining Foster in double figures for the Wildcats were Southwell who had 14 points and Spradling with 12 all of them coming by way of the trey. Four Iowa State players were in double figures led by Melvin Ejim with 20 points, Georges Niang with 18, Matt Thomas with 14 and DeAndre Kane with 10.

Kansas State (14-6, 4-3) returns to Bramlage Coliseum on Tuesday night to host Texas Tech. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
