Baylor Pulls Away From K-State in Double OT

Nino Williams had a career high 20 points and Marcus Foster added 18, but Kansas State was unable to hold on to a late lead in regulation as Baylor defeated the Wildcats 87-73 in double-overtime Saturday night at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.

K-State held a 30-21 halftime advantage before the Bears opened the second half on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 30-29. After that the Wildcats used an 18-10 surge to lead 48-39 with 9:17 remaining but Baylor refused to quit and steadily chipped away at their deficit. The key moment of the game came with 23 seconds remaining in regulation when Foster was at the line to shoot two free throws. Make them both and it’s a two-possession game but Foster missed the second free throw and Baylor then went down the floor and grabbed three Offensive rebounds off missed shots and as the buzzer sounded, the Bears’ three-point shooting machine Brady Heslip knocked down his first of the game to tie the score at 57 apiece and send K-State into its second consecutive overtime game.

In the first extra period, Foster missed another free throw that would have given the Wildcats the lead but K-State got one more chance to win after a Defensive rebound with just over one second left. However a shot attempt was well off the mark and the game was headed to a second overtime. The Bears then scored the first seven points in the second overtime and never looked back in securing their second straight win and sending the Wildcats to their fifth loss in six Big 12 road games this season.

Also scoring in double figures for K-State was Thomas Gipson with 12 points. For Baylor, Cory Jefferson led in scoring with 21 points but it was Kenny Chery who turned in a triple-double with 20 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Austin also contributed 18 points.

Kansas State (18-7, 7-5) will return to action on Wednesday at Bramlage Coliseum when they host TCU. The Horned Frogs remain winless in conference play after losing at Kansas 95-65 on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
