Gov. Sam Brownback has declared a State of Disaster Emergency for all of Kansas in response to the major winter storm moving through the state. The declaration authorizes state resources to assist communities affected by the winter storm still moving across Kansas.
“As predicted and expected, snow has been blanketing the state for several hours causing deteriorating travel conditions,” said Brownback. “I want to continue to urge everyone to avoid travel unless it is absolutely essential.”
The Kansas Highway Patrol is attributing two deaths in a Crawford County vehicle accident to weather conditions.
The Kansas National Guard is deploying nine teams consisting of two humvees and four Soldiers to transport emergency and medical personnel and assist stranded motorists. The teams will operate out of Dodge City, Emporia, Hays, Hiawatha, Iola, Kansas City, Kan., Mission, Salina, Topeka and Wichita. Their mission is anticipated to run through 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb 5.
“We still have some of the most difficult conditions ahead of us as the snowfall is followed by heavy winds and bitterly cold temperatures,” said Brownback. “Travel will remain treacherous and temperatures will be dangerously cold. So, please, stay safe and if you don’t have to travel, stay home.”
“Our State Emergency Operations Center will remain open through the night to monitor the weather situation, communicate with counties about needs they may have and coordinate state resources,” said Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, Kansas Adjutant General and Kansas Division of Emergency Management.
