Chassidy Fussell scored 15 points, three of them on a key basket with 35.6 seconds left as Texas fought off a late surge from Kansas State to earn a 69-63 victory Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Texas led 37-30 at halftime and appeared to have the game under control by opening the second half on an 8-3 run to lead 45-33 with 17:34 left on a layup by Brady Sanders. However, K-State found its second wind and went on an 18-6 run over the next six minutes to tie the score at 51-51. The score was tied at 53 apiece when Texas’ Nekia Jones hit what proved to be the game-winning shot on a three-pointer with 6:24 remaining. The Longhorns led 62-55 with 3:48 left in the game before Ashia Woods kept K-State alive with a three-pointer. After Texas went back out to a six-point lead on a layup by Empress Davenport, Brianna Craig gave the Wildcats one last shot with a trey of her own with 1:31 left to cut the deficit to 64-61. Less than a minute later, Fussell clinched the win for the Longhorns with a three-pointer from the corner.

K-State was in the game much of the second half despite making only 19 of 50 shot attempts. Woods led the Wildcats with 15 points and Katya Leick added 13. The Texas Defense was able to shut down Freshman star Leticia Romero who was held to eight points and made just two of 10 shots from the floor. In addition to Fussell’s 15 points, Davenport had 12 points and Nneka Enemkpali added 10 for Texas.

Kansas State (9-14, 3-9) will next be in action when they host Texas Tech on Saturday in the annual Play for Kay game to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. K-State will wear special pink uniforms for the game which tips off at 2 p.m.
