On Monday, June 23,a replacement project will begin on the U.S. 24 Bridge located over the Deep Creek drainage area located 1.05 miles east of Broadway Street in Belvue (Pottawatomie County). Project work includes replacement of the existing 33-foot wide concrete deck girder bridge structure with a 44-foot wide box bridge structure, complete with 12-foot driving lanes and 10-foot shoulders.
Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.Beginning on Monday, June 23, weather permitting, crews will begin construction of a shoofly detour, complete with one 14-foot driving lane each direction, that will carry traffic around the south side of the existing bridge location while the new bridge is being constructed.
Once the shoofly roadway is complete, eastbound and westbound U.S. 24 will then be shifted to the shoofly detour. There will be a 14-foot lane width restriction and a 45 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone throughout the project duration.
Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage, cones and barriers. Drivers should expect minor delays throughout the project duration.The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
Ebert Construction Company, Inc. (Wamego, KS) is the primary contractor on this bridge replacement project with a total contract cost of $626,995. The scheduled completion date for the bridge replacement project is late October 2014, weather permitting.
