K-99 Reopens, K-9 still closed in Marshall Co.

All lanes of K-9 in the city of Frankfort in Marshall County will REMAIN CLOSED as cleanup work is underway from Monday’s Union Pacific coal train derailment that occurred around 9:00 a.m.. K-9 will REMAIN CLOSED until further notice between the U.S. 77 junction at Blue Rapids and the K-99 junction in Frankfort. A total of twelve coal cars derailed with heavy damage sustained to the tracks themselves.
 
At this point in time it is estimated that K-9 is tentatively scheduled to reopen sometime this Sunday, weather permitting. Drivers should expect delays and must use alternate routes until further notice.

Union Pacific Railroad indicates 12 coal cars derailed with heavy damage sustained to the tracks themselves. At this point in time it is estimated that K-9 is tentatively scheduled to reopen sometime this Sunday, weather permitting. Drivers should expect delays and must use alternate routes until further notice.

Updated Monday afternoon:

12 coal cars derailed on a Union Pacific train Monday morning, with the 137 car train headed from Wyoming to Texas. That’s according to Union Pacific Spokesman Mark Davis, who told KMAN Monday afternoon heavy moving equipment arrived at about noon Monday.
 
The rail cars with coal were being removed and crews had about a thousand feet of track that needed to be replaced. Davis expects the efforts to continue into the overnight hours.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that K-99 from Frankfort to Blaine closed earlier this morning after a coal train derailment in Frankfort has re-opened. However, K-9 remains closed from the K-44 junction at Blue Rapids to the K-99 Junction. A total of nine cars carrying coal derailed shortly after 9 a.m. causing significant damage to the tracks. Below is the earlier story on this morning’s derailment.

Due to a coal train derailment in the city of Frankfort this morning two highways in Marshall County are currently closed.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that K-99 is CLOSED to all traffic from the K-9 junction north of Frankfort (Marshall County) to the K-16 junction at Blaine (Pottawatomie County).

K-9 is CLOSED at the K-44 junction at Blue Rapids to K-99 junction south of Frankfort.

A total of nine coal cars have derailed with heavy damage sustained to the tracks themselves. No buildings or structures have been reported damage at this point in time.

At this point in time it is unknown when the roadways will be reopened. Drivers should expect delays and must use alternate routes until further notice.
