MANHATTAN — Partnering firms of Workshop Architects Inc. and Bowman Bowman Novick Inc. have been selected to design the final plans for the K-State Student Union renovation at Kansas State University. The firms are expected to begin planning phases on campus later in September.

The selection means the firms will continue their work on the Union project. They were selected in fall 2013 to develop a comprehensive architectural building program, conceptual design and phasing and sequencing recommendations.

Workshop, led by Jan van den Kieboom, focuses on creating environments for social interaction for colleges and universities. Kieboom has led planning and design projects for more than 25 colleges and universities nationwide, including the University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, Oklahoma State University and Northwestern University.

Based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Workshop team members for the project include Angela van Dyke, project coordinator; Peter van den Kieboom, senior designer; and Scott Ackatz, project architect.

Bowman is a local, multidiscipline design firm with offices in Manhattan and in Kansas City, Missouri. The three principals directing the firm are Brent Bowman, Lorie Doolittle-Bowman, and Patrick Schaub. Their portfolio includes Hale Library at Kansas State University, academic buildings, visitor and interpretive centers, religious buildings, residences, office buildings, recreational and athletic facilities and downtown redevelopment.

Kansas State University students approved the $25 million Union renovation project in spring 2013 and construction could begin as early as next summer.
