David Garrett who played Cornerback for Kansas State for three years which included two bowl games, died early Saturday after he was shot outside of a nightclub in his native Cleveland, Ohio.
According to a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the shooting occurred shortly before 3:30 a.m. local time Saturday outside the Lavish Ultra Lounge on West 117th Street. Witnesses told police that there was a fight inside the nightclub that eventually spilled outside. Garrett was shot in the chest by a bullet that had been fired into a crowd he was standing in and he taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died at around 4 a.m.
The 26-year old Garrett was from Painesville, Ohio about 45 miles Northeast of Cleveland where he starred at T.W. Harvey High School. He had transferred to K-State from Fort Scott Community College. Garrett started for the Wildcats for three years and was an All Big 12 selection by the Associated Press in 2010. During K-State’s 2011 Cotton Bowl season, Garrett is best known for an interception return he had for a touchdown against Kent State.
Police in Cleveland are continuing their investigation and no arrests have been made at this time.
