The Wamego Police Department has been notified that local businesses have received fraudulent telephone calls from people claiming to be with the City of Wamego trying to “collect on overdue electric bills.” Another business received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be with Westar Energy, also “collecting on overdue electric bills.” These individuals are seeking credit card numbers from businesses or hoping to have money wired to an account in order to “avoid disconnection of their electrical service.”
Those who receive such a call are advised not to share financial information and to report the fraudulent activity to the Deputy Chief of Police Paul Schliffke at 456-9553.
