Zero accidents in several of the directorates–that’s how Assistant Secretary of the Army Katherine Hammack describes what was being honored during her visit to Fort Riley Thursday. Hammack talked to reporters about the importance of safety to the Army, following the Safety Risk Management Awards Ceremony on the local post.
Assistant Secretary Hammack says Fort Riley is setting the standard with significant reductions across the board in accidents. Slips and falls due to snow and ice or a sidewalk that needs to be repaired are just examples–Hammack adds it’s important to determine the cause and make a safe workplace for all employees.
And while a recent threat to Fort Riley involving an alleged bomb plot by two men now in custody has perhaps made us all a bit nervous, Asst. Secretary Hammack provided her perspective while visiting the local post Thursday. She says it reinforces the tightening on our bases is important, which means it may take a bit longer for visitors to get on base.

But he Asst. Secretary adds the Army wants to be sure it’s here when needed and called upon and says while we look at security, we want to be able to continue the military mission and the training that they do. She admits “It’s a dangerous world that we live in today.”

Hammack’s Asst. Secretary of the Army Position includes Installations, Energy, and Environment.
