The Rock Creek Mustangs won their first-ever state baseball championship with a 2-0 win over Concordia to take the 4A-Division II title Monday in Topeka.

Justin Reiss threw six shutout innings and also drove in one of the Mustangs two runs in the win. Shilo Schaake also had an RBI single and picked up the save by throwing the seventh inning.

Earlier in the day, Rock Creek beat Baxter Springs 1-0 in the state semifinal. Shilo Schaake threw a complete game, two-hit shutout to lead the Mustangs into the title game.

Rock Creek didn’t allow an opposing base-runner to get past first base in either game. They only allowed two runs in their three state tournament wins.

The Mustangs softball team came up just short of a state title in a 2-1 loss in eight innings to Jeff West on Monday in Topeka.

Rock Creek gave up the game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning after tying the game in the seventh.

It’s the third time that head coach Jeri Brummett has finished as the state runner-up during her time at Rock Creek. The other two came in 2009 and 2012.
